Product Description
Established in 1798, the Tobermory Distillery is the only distillery on the island of Mull and one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland. It is unique, not just because of its idyllic location, but because it produces two different, but equally alluring, single malts: the fruity, unpeated Tobermory, and the more robust and smoky Ledaig. Centuries have passed, but their uncompromising tradition, dedication, and devotion remain.
The Ledaig 1996 Vintage Single Malt Scotch Whisky is some of the first spirit distilled when peated single malt production commenced at the distillery in 1996. Peat-dried malted barley is married with naturally peat infused water from the distillery’s private water source—a dark aromatic lochan, high in the mountains above the village of Tobermory— ensuring an intense smoky flavorsome character. Matured in superior Oloroso sherry casks, the result is a wonderfully peated single malt with apple and a hint of mint with citrus aromas. These disappear into the dark as the peaty embers glow into a smoky finale.
Distilled and filled into cask in the summer of 1998, this delicious Ledaig was matured for almost 6 years before being transferred to Oloroso Sherry casks in the summer of 2004 for a further 13 years.
Tasting Notes
— Color: Rich deep gold
— Nose: Fragrant smoke, toffee caramel, seaweed, apple with a hint of mint and a few citrus notes
— Palate: Crackling peat sets off millions of flavor explosions on the palate, black pepper then bursts then a light sherry sweetness
— Finish: Smooth with a spicy salt tail, these disappear into the dark as the peaty embers glow into a smoky finale
