Product Description

Roger Maris (1934-1985) is an icon in baseball lore, breaking Babe Ruth's long standing record of 60 home runs in one season. But he was a reluctant hero, one not prone to boast or swagger about this unprecedented achievement. He was shy in fact and thus not very accessible to the media that season of 1961. An often told story is that because of the strain and pressure for interviews, as well as resentment from pro-Ruth fans, his hair actually fell out in clumps that summer.

Because Maris received so many requests for his autograph after retirement, he had photographs printed with a caption beneath depicting him hitting home run # 61 on October 1, 1961. All of us are familiar with that image of his famous swing and ball landing in the right field bleachers of Yankee Stadium that autumn afternoon. Many of us even remember the famous 'Holy Cow' home run call by Yankee announcer, Phil Rizzuto. Maris would sign these wonderful mementos and give them to his close friends, relatives and fans. They have become staples in the hobby and extremely popular among collectors. Whenever we find one for sale, we immediately purchase it. These are great collectibles that tell one of the most important stories in baseball history. Records come and go, but this one is among the most important --and perhaps the most popular and controversial of all.

Measuring 4 1/2" x 7" inches and featuring a wonderful caption explaining this important moment in baseball, Roger has placed his large autograph in blue ink. It remains in its original Mint state. Condition is always an important concern of ours. If an item does not meet our strict standards, we pass on it. It's as simple as that. This one certainly measures up and looks great in the frame we selected, as well as the Yankee-blue matting. Of course ultraviolet protected plexiglas and archival Mylar was used for further protection from the elements.

The result is one stunning piece of baseball history that is ready for all visitors to view on your favorite wall. Yes, this one speaks for itself — all one needs to do is read the caption itself. Caveat however: it may just spark a conversation about the baseball of old versus the baseball of new.
