Product Description

Ancient Greece, circa 5th to 4th century BC. Time of Alexander the Great! Huge ceramic lid to a large pyxis, a round-bodied cylindrical vessel designed to contain items of importance to an individual or household in the ancient Greek world. This wonderful lid is an art piece unto itself, with a central raised handle element painted in black, behind which are concentric circles of radiating patterns, the far rim decorated with a stylized “Meander” pattern. In an excellent state of preservation, with beautiful surfaces, the lower portion of the top and near entirety of the underside still encrusted with mineral deposits having been buried at an angle in the earth for well over 2,000 years. W: 6.75”.
